The Cake Site

There are many different ways that you can make a delicious cake. Over the years, this culinary treat has become a real staple to desserts that are served around the world. The rich history of cakes dates back thousands of years, long before man had the modern aged cooking devices of the present day. Cakes have been enjoyed and savored by humanity and its many different cultures nearly since we first started using heat to cook. Not surprisingly, during the present day there is a multitude of different cake styles as well as numerous different ways to make a cake that will knock your taste buds off.

Most cakes include some commonly used ingredients in order to make them. Many times this includes a combination of ingredients that may be called for, including but not limited to: Butter (or oil, such as vegetable oil or olive oil), eggs, flour, milk (or water) and sugar. Additionally, some cakes need to rise in order to bake properly. Many times recipes will also call for yeast for leavening or instant yeast or even baking soda (as is called for in some sponge cake recipes). Aside from the main ingredients, cakes many times are filled with purees, creams or custards or fresh fruits, preserves, sweetened sauces and or nuts. The finished cakes are usually frosted or covered in sugar-based icing and sometimes are decorated using mediums such as marzipan, candied fruit, candy, confectioner sugar or shaved nuts, such as almonds.

Cakes are commonly used for celebrations such as anniversaries, birthdays, formal events, going away parties, retirements and weddings. There is a myriad of different cake recipes that have been created over the years, spanning the gambit from the main five categories of cake: Butter cakes, cheesecakes, premixed and boxed cakes, sponge cakes and yeast cakes. Some common cake shapes include: Angel food cakes, Bundt cakes, cake balls, cupcakes and madeleines, layer cakes, sheet cakes, Swiss rolls (or jelly rolls), sheet cakes and wedding cakes. Cakes can vary from yeast-based cakes, to unleavened cakes, to cheese or custard cakes. In the past, the process of cake making was one that was seemingly complicated and laborious. However, modern day procurements – such as modernized cooking utensils, pans and ovens – have greatly simplified this process. Amenities such as boxed and premixed cakes, for example, allow for almost any culinary amateur to make a cake that they desire by using only standard household cooking appliances.
